Blowdrying your hair can cause hair damage. Here are natural alternatives to drying and styling your hair after washing.

How Blowdrying Your Hair With a Blowdryer Can Damage Your Hair

Blowdrying your hair has been found to damage your hair shaft and other parts of your hair under some circumstances. It can also damage your hair’s color. But this damage is greatest when you blowdry your hair with the blowdryer only 5 centimeters away. At this distance, you’re subjecting your hair to a temperature of 95 degrees Celsius.

But experts say that blowdrying your hair with the blowdryer 15 centimeters away only subjects your hair to a temperature of 45 degrees Celsius, which greatly minimizes any hair damage from blowdrying. They also advise you to use continuous motions so that you’re not letting one spot heat up too much at any one time.

They also say that using high-wattage blowdryers of more than 3,000 watts can cause hair damage to thin hair. But if your hair is thicker, frizzy, or like an afro, then you’ll need a 3,000-watt or more blowdryer to style your hair.

Natural Ways to Dry and Style Your Hair

Since it’s evident that using a blowdryer causes some damage to your hair, you should try these natural alternatives to drying and styling your hair to lessen the overall damage to your hair over time:

If you want waves and curls, sleep with your hair in a bun. London hair expert, Sam Burnett, says that instead of blowdrying your hair after showering before bed, you should let it dry by 50 percent. Then he says you can braid, twist, and plait your hair into different sizes and placements into a bun and go to bed with it. The curls and waves you want will take shape while you sleep.

Use frizz control lotion. Use a natural frizz control lotion while leaving your hair to dry without blowdrying. This will give your hair an un-done look when you want a casual look for get-togethers with close friends or just hanging home with your family.

Avoid frizz by shaking off your hair and not hair brushing. After showering, shake your hair up and down. This removes excess water faster and better than excessive towel-drying. Towel-drying can lead to more frizz, but gently lifting and shaking the roots of your hair with your fingertips lowers flatness and lessens frizz. Use a wide-tooth comb and your fingertips on your wet hair because this helps preserve curls and waves. Don’t use a hair brush because it creates excess frizz.

For 80s-like curls, use homemade cloth curlers. While your hair is still damp, split hair into two and use two strips of cloth to fold over the ends and curl the hair around the cloth towards your scalp. Then tie both strips together. Repeat the process for the rest of your hair, then let your hair dry. Once dry, remove the strips of cloth and be amazed at your new curls!

Try these natural ways to dry and style your hair. They’ll give your hair a healing break from the hair-damaging effects of blowdrying.
